Hybe and MBC resolve their differences after 4 years of conflict

After four years of conflict, Hybe and MBC have buried the metaphorical hatchet. Their feud began in 2019 when BTS couldn't participate in the annual MBC Music Festival due to an overlapping schedule in the US, which had been scheduled for December 31. Following this event, all artists under Hybe were barred from performing on MBC Music Core for their comebacks.

On October 30, Bang Si Hyuk, the chairman of Hybe, met with MBC's president, Ahn Hyeong Joon, for a discussion. Ahn Hyeong Joon extended an invitation as a gesture of regret. During the meeting, the president expressed his regret for everything that had transpired in the past and the harm it had inflicted upon Hybe's artists.

The president shared, “We firmly agree that there’s a need to establish a relationship between artists and broadcasting companies that befits the respectable status of K-pop. Additionally, we also agreed to improve the long-standing flawed production culture between broadcasting and entertainment companies and to create an environment for content production with mutual respect and consideration.”

During the meeting, Bang Si Hyuk emphasized the importance of respecting and prioritizing the rights of idols for the sustainable growth of K-pop. He also highlighted an area in need of improvement, citing the extended waiting times that idols endure even after a program has concluded, when waiting to meet with the production team.

In response, Ahn Hyeong Joon responded that from now “MBC would take the lead in fostering an environment that supports the rights of artists and establishes a fair partnership where mutual growth is possible.”

After the meeting, Bang Si Hyuk added “I’d like to express my deep gratitude to MBC for their sincere apology and their commitment to improving the rights of K-pop artists. I hope this meeting will serve as a starting point for a new era where a healthy content production environment is established across the entire domestic entertainment industry, transcending the boundaries of our two companies.”

This reconciliation sparked a debate among fans of Hybe's groups. Some were elated to learn that their favorite groups would have the opportunity to promote on MBC for the first time, while others believed that the damage had already been done and they couldn't bring themselves to forgive MBC.
