Fans react to the nominees for Mama Awards 2023

The MAMA Awards, formerly known as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, is a significant music awards ceremony in South Korea. The inaugural ceremony took place in Seoul in 1999, and it has since become an annual event that celebrates and recognizes K-pop artists and other Asian talents.

This year, the ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Tokyo Dome on November 28 and 29. The selection criteria have already been disclosed to maintain transparency with the public:

Artist of the Year and Artist Category Awards: 20% judge panel, 40% download and streaming, and 40% physical sales.

Song of the Year and Genre Category Awards – 20% judge panel, 80% song downloads/streaming.

Album of the Year – 20% judge panel evaluation, 80% physical album sales

Worldwide Icon of the Year and Worldwide Fans’ Choice – 70% Mnet Plus votes, 30% Spotify votes

Best Music Video – 20% judge panel evaluation, 80% music video

The list of nominees for each category has been revealed, sparking discussions among Netizens who debated the alleged unfair exclusion of certain K-pop groups from the nominations. While many outstanding artists received nominations, the sheer number of idols led to some notable omissions in specific categories.

For instance, some ARMYs were surprised to see Agust D (Suga), J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook, and V nominated for their solo albums, but not RM and Jin. It was a widely shared sentiment that RM and Jin also deserved recognition.

Conversely, Ateez secured a nomination for the "Worldwide Fans' Choice" category, which delighted Atinys, but left them shocked that the group wasn't nominated in more prominent performance-related categories. Ateez is renowned for their exceptional performances, even earning them the nickname "performance kings." Their extraordinary year, marked by their new album "Outlaw" and a successful world tour, has left Netizens puzzled as to why they weren't nominated for major categories.

Netizens also complained about the nominations after seeing that both Itzy and Nmixx aren’t nominated in any category. Some even went as far as to claim that Mama had a bias against Itzy

Despite the ongoing debates and controversies, many fans expressed their joy at seeing their favorite artists nominated. These included beloved acts like Twice, Stray Kids, Ive, TXT, Hwasa, Exo, as well as some notable K-hip-hop artists, including Ash Island, Jay Park, and Big Naughty.
